How Geothermal Works
The Basics
A geothermal system replaces both your home's existing air conditioning and heating equipment with a powerful heat pump and safe, underground pipes that move heat between the earth and your home.
Because the temperature underground is constant (approximately 55 degrees), the energy required to heat water running through the pipes in the winter - or cool it in the summer - is minimal, making geothermal highly efficient.
Cold Weather
When the weather is cold, a water and refrigerant mix in the pipes heats up as it travels through the part of the loop that's buried underground.
Once it gets back above ground, the warmed water transfers heat into the building.
The water cools down after its heat is transferred. It is pumped back underground where it heats up once more, starting the process again.
Warm Weather
On a hot day, the system runs in reverse.
The water cools the building and then is pumped underground where extra heat is transferred to the ground around the pipes.
The cycle repeats, as the water that has been cooled by the lower underground temperatures recirculates through the building to provide comfortable relief on a hot day.
Upgrade to geothermal, and never buy heating oil, natural gas or propane again. Never worry about separate maintenance bills or problems for your air conditioning and heating equipment. You will replace both with a single, highly efficient, long-lasting technology. Call us today at (856) 857-0029 to get started on a clean and comfortable future for your home and family!
Geothermal FAQs
1 / What are the components of a geothermal heating and cooling system?
There are two main parts of a geothermal system – a heat pump inside your home that typically takes the place of your old furnace, and a buried "ground loop" of pipes outside your home that circulate fluid which transfers heat between your home and the earth.
2 / What are the advantages of geothermal systems?
Geothermal combines heating and cooling into a single highly-efficient system with low operating costs that don't fluctuate with changes in gas or oil prices. There are no gas fumes, furnaces or potential carbon monoxide leaks. Geothermal is the cleanest heating and cooling technology available, and has the lowest ongoing cost of operation.
3 / How long do geothermal systems last?
Install a geothermal system today, and prepare to enjoy reliable heating and cooling for decades. Geothermal heat pumps typically last 20 to 25 years, and the ground loops outside your home can last for more than 50 years.
4 / Are there incentives available?
Yes! In fact, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 extends existing geothermal tax credits, and makes geothermal one of the most incentivized clean energy solutions on the market. A 30% federal tax credit with no upper limit covers most equipment and labor costs for residential geothermal projects. Eligible structures must be used as a residence by the taxpayer, although primary residency isn't required. In fact, if geothermal is installed in more than one home, there's no limitation on the number of times the credit can be claimed. As with any federal tax program, there are some nuances and specific equipment requirements. But D&L can help you maximize any credits you're eligible for. All in all, geothermal heating and cooling systems are now more economical than ever.
